July and August happenings; Dizzy’s Club and Village Vanguard leader shows!!

Hi everyone! It’s been a great summer, and I’ve been writing tons of new material to share with you on upcoming gigs. I’m doing some teaching in Langnau, Switzerland in July, as well as leading two very special gigs in August– at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola and at the Village Vanguard! Both will be my first times bringing in my own groups, and we couldn’t be more excited!!

On Tuesday, August 2nd, I’ll be bringing in my quartet from Behind the Sky, our 2015 release that featured Tom Harrell and received a four-star Downbeat Magazine review. Joining us for this show will be one my favorite drummers around, Billy Drummond!! We’ll be playing music from Behind the Sky as well as debuting several new compositions that we will be recording in September during a tour of Argentina!! Two sets, 730 and 930. Please come and support this great band! You can get tickets here!

Then, on Wednesday, August 10th, I’ll be leading a new group at the Village Vanguard, perhaps jazz’s most venerated and respected rooms!! This quartet, featuring Matt Mitchell on piano, Drew Gress on bass and Tom Rainey on drums, will be playing several of composer/saxophonist/brilliant mind John Zorn’s new Book of Bagatelles, as part of his week at the Vanguard. We’ll play one set at 1030 PM, following the extraordinary Craig Taborn in a solo piano setting. Please help us pack the place!! You can get tickets here!

As always, thanks for your continued support, and I hope to see you out and about!

Top CDs of 2015; January and February Shows

Happy new year!  2015 was an exciting and monumental year, for sure!

My two releases, Behind the Sky (featuring Tom Harrell, Luis Perdomo, Yasushi Nakamura and Rudy Royston) and Inaction is an Action (solo sopranino saxophone) were both named to several year-end lists!  Behind the Sky placed in the NPR Poll, and Inaction is an Action was awarded here and here!

In addition, three CDs I was a proud sideman on (all released in October, coincidentally) were all named to various year-end lists, including all three on the aforementioned NPR poll.  Brazen Heart (by Dave Douglas), Mauch Chunk (by Mostly Other People do the Killing) and Tales of the Unforeseen (by Barry Altschul) are all distinctly different and fun in their own ways.

I did a lot of touring in 2015 with the above groups, including my first time in Australia and bringing my group to the Detroit Jazz Festival.  Hopefully 2016 will bring even more music!  Thanks for your support throughout the years.  Positivity rules!
